UFC 106: Griffin outlasts Ortiz, Kos chokes out Johnson.

Originally this was hyped to be one of the top cards of the year, that is of course until Brock Lesnar had to pull out from his ailing illness that only continued to get worse. I kept thinking, wow this could be a good card if Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin were on it.

Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffin fought another hard fight with Griffin coming out on top by split decision. Ortiz felt like he got robbed but in all fairness I believe the fight could have gone either way, and on my personal scoring card for the fight, it was a draw in my eyes as I thought Ortiz squeaked out round one(10-9) and definitely won round two(10-9), while Griffin easily took over in round three(10-8). Once again, the judges showed erratic inconsistency in the main event where one judge gave Griffin all three rounds. Ortiz punished Griffin in the second round with elbows leaving Griffin with a nice cut to go with it. Tito didn’t look any different from the old Ortiz, even with a “new back.”

Josh Koscheck came prepared and forced Anthony Johnson to a rear naked choke in a fight with several eye gouges to go with it. Koscheck continues to amaze me, with this being his 6th fight in a year and a half and also earning submission of the night and fight of the night honors. He even made his status known as he called out Dan Hardy, claiming he was the #1 contender, not Hardy, for Georges St. Pierre’s welterweight championship.

- Antonio Rogerio Nogueira made he arrival known to the UFC, pummeling out Luiz Cane by TKO early in the first round, winning knockout of the night honors.

- Amir Sadollah resurrected himself by controlling the stand up and defeating Phil Baroni in a unanimous decision victory.

- Ben Saunders felt he had something to prove as he ended his fight with vicious knees, putting Marcus Davis out cold!

- Jake Rosholt controlled Kendall Grove with takedowns and control, however, it only takes one mistake as Grove sank in a triangle choke late in the first round.
